A fourth lower

Most baritone guitars have longer strings and are tuned to B standard: B E A D F♯ B. That is a perfect fourth, or five semitones, below standard tuning. Some players prefer A standard or drop A.

Low strings take a moment to settle, so let each one ring before you read the needle.

Frequently asked questions

How is a baritone guitar tuned?

Most baritone guitars use B standard: B1 E2 A2 D3 F♯3 B3. That is the same pattern as standard tuning, just a perfect fourth lower.

Can I tune a regular guitar to B standard?

Only with much heavier strings. On a normal guitar, regular strings tuned down to B feel loose and buzz. Baritone or extra-heavy string sets work better.

What other tunings suit a baritone guitar?

A standard (A D G C E A), drop A (A E A D F♯ B) and drop B are common, especially in heavy music.
