Six courses, twelve strings
A 12-string guitar is tuned like a 6-string, but each string is doubled into a pair, called a course. The four low courses (E A D G) add a second string an octave higher. On the B and high E courses, both strings play the same note (a unison).
Tune one string of a pair, mute it with a finger, then tune its partner. When both match, the course sounds like one shimmering note.

Frequently asked questions
How is a 12-string guitar tuned?
From the 6th course to the 1st: E2/E3, A2/A3, D3/D4, G3/G4, B3/B3 and E4/E4. The low four courses are octave pairs and the top two are unisons.
Can a tuner hear both strings of a pair at once?
Not reliably. Pluck and tune one string at a time and mute the other with a fingertip.
Should a 12-string guitar be tuned down?
Many players tune a half or whole step down to reduce the extra tension of twelve strings. Tune both strings of each course to the lower note, and keep the octave strings an octave higher.
