Tuning a bass guitar
Standard bass tuning is E A D G, one octave below the four lowest strings of a guitar. Low notes take a moment to settle, so let each string ring for a second before you read the needle.
Tip: play the harmonic at the 12th fret for a cleaner signal, especially on phone and laptop microphones.

Frequently asked questions
What are the notes on a bass guitar?
A 4-string bass is tuned E A D G (E1, A1, D2, G2), exactly one octave below the four lowest guitar strings. A 5-string adds a low B (B0), and a 6-string adds a high C as well.
My laptop mic can’t hear the low E. What can I do?
Small microphones have trouble hearing notes below 50 Hz. Play the natural harmonic at the 12th fret instead. It sounds an octave higher, so the tuner hears it much more easily. Lock the string in Manual mode, and the tuner will ignore the octave difference.
How do I tune to drop D on bass?
Choose Drop D in the tuning menu, then lower the E string a whole step until the needle centres on D. The other strings stay at A D G.
Can I tune a fretless or upright bass here?
Yes. Fretless basses use the same tunings. For upright bass, try our double bass tuner, which has bowed reference tones.
