Guitar shapes, ukulele size

A guitalele has six strings tuned A D G C E A, exactly like a guitar with a capo at the 5th fret. Guitar chord shapes work, but they sound a fourth higher.

The top four strings match a low-G ukulele, so ukulele chord shapes work on them too.

Frequently asked questions

How do you tune a guitalele?

From the 6th string to the 1st: A2 D3 G3 C4 E4 A4. That is standard guitar tuning raised a perfect fourth.

Is a guitalele tuned like a ukulele?

Its top four strings (G C E A) match a low-G ukulele. The two extra low strings, A and D, add lower notes, like on a guitar.

Can I tune a guitalele to standard guitar tuning?

Not well. Guitalele strings are made for higher notes on a short neck. If you tune them down to E, they go loose and buzz.
