Tuning in fifths
Violin strings are tuned G D A E, with each string a perfect fifth above the one below. Tune the A first, then the others. Bowing gives the tuner a steadier signal than plucking.
Playing with an orchestra? Many orchestras use A4 = 442 Hz. Open the settings and tap 442.

Frequently asked questions
What notes is a violin tuned to?
From the lowest string: G3, D4, A4 and E5. Each string is a perfect fifth above the one before.
Should I use the pegs or the fine tuners?
Use the pegs for big changes and the fine tuners (the small screws on the tailpiece) for the last few cents. As you turn a peg, push it gently into the pegbox so it doesn’t slip.
Which string should I tune first?
Start with the A string, because orchestras tune to it. Then tune D, G and E. Orchestras often use A4 = 442 Hz, which you can set in the settings.
Can I tune with the bow instead of plucking?
Yes. A steady bow stroke gives the tuner a cleaner, longer signal than plucking (pizzicato), so it is the most accurate way to tune.
