Trombone Tuner

Tune your trombone with your microphone. The tenor and bass trombone read music at concert pitch in bass clef, so the note shown is the note that sounds.

Tuning slide and slide positions

Set the main tuning slide first. Play a note in first position and adjust until the needle is in the centre. Pull the tuning slide out to lower the pitch, or push it in to raise it.

After that, playing in tune depends on your slide arm. Play through the positions and watch the needle to learn exactly where each note is. The positions get further apart as you move the slide out.

Why use it

On the trombone, playing in tune depends on your slide arm. The needle shows exactly where each note is in each position.

How to use it

Set the main tuning slide using a note in first position. Then play through the positions and adjust the slide until each note is green.

Frequently asked questions

Is the trombone a transposing instrument?

Not in bass and tenor clef, where it reads at concert pitch. Brass band parts in treble clef are written in B♭, so use the B♭ setting for those.

What note does a trombone tune to?

Bands usually tune to concert B♭ in first position, and orchestras tune to A.

Why are some notes out of tune even with the slide set?

Each harmonic has its own natural tuning. So some notes need the slide a little in or out from the usual position. The tuner shows you how far.
