The classic ukulele size

The soprano is the smallest standard ukulele. It is almost always tuned G C E A with a high G (G4 C4 E4 A4). This high, re-entrant G gives it the bright, classic ukulele sound.

Some older songbooks use D tuning (A D F♯ B), which is a whole step higher.

Frequently asked questions

How is a soprano ukulele tuned?

Standard soprano tuning is G4 C4 E4 A4 from the 4th string to the 1st. Remember it with “My Dog Has Fleas”.

Can a soprano ukulele use low G?

It is possible, but the short string length makes a low G string floppy. Low G suits concert and tenor ukuleles better.

Why does my new soprano ukulele keep going flat?

Nylon and fluorocarbon strings stretch during the first week. Retune often, and they will settle and stay in tune.
